DFW is the First Airport in the World to Earn GBAC STAR Accreditation

News Image (DFW AIRPORT, Texas – Aug. 20, 2020) – As part of its commitment to provide an environment that is safe, secure and ready for everyone, Dallas Fort Worth International (DFW) Airport earned GBAC STAR™ accreditation from the Global Biorisk Advisory Council (GBAC), a division of ISSA, the worldwide cleaning industry association. DFW Airport is the first airport in the world to earn GBAC STAR accreditation.

To be worthy of GBAC STAR accreditation, an organization must:

  • Establish and maintain a cleaning, disinfection and infectious disease prevention program to minimize risks associated with infectious agents like the novel coronavirus.
  • Have the proper cleaning protocols, disinfection techniques and work practices in place to combat biohazards and infectious disease.
  • Have highly informed and prepared cleaning professionals who are trained for outbreak and infectious disease preparation and response.

“This GBAC STAR accreditation tells us our efforts to keep the well-being of everyone at our airport the top priority is being supported by the industry’s highest standards for cleaning, disinfection and infectious disease prevention,” said Ken Buchanan, Executive Vice President for Revenue Management and Customer Experience at DFW Airport. “The hard work and commitment necessary to earn this kind of industry standard recognition is appreciated and reinforces our focus on ensuring the safety and well-being of customers, employees and partners at DFW Airport.”

Composed of international leaders in the field of microbial-pathogenic threat analysis, mitigation, response and recovery, GBAC provides training, guidance, accreditation, certification, crisis management assistance and leadership to government, commercial and private entities looking to mitigate, quickly address and/or recover from biological threats and real-time crises.

“While nearly every organization can claim that they’ve improved their approach to cleaning in the wake of the pandemic, those that have earned GBAC STAR accreditation have the added credibility of independent validation,” said ISSA Executive Director John Barrett. “GBAC’s experts review each facility’s plans for cleaning, disinfection, and infection prevention to ensure the approach is effective and sustainable.”
